Dec 1, 2014

The Minnesota Civil War Commemoration Task Force and Battle of Nashville Preservation Society will dedicate a new Minnesota Monument, the first such monument to be installed at the battlefield 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Benton Smith Road Visitor’s site. The event is open to the public.

The dedication event will highlight the Battle of Nashville and the pivotal role played by the four Minnesota Regiments on Dec. 16, 1864 who made the decisive charge on Shy’s Hill in the last major battle of the Civil War in the West.

The installation of this new monument is part of Minnesota’s 150th sesquicentennial Civil War ceremonies to commemorate Minnesota Civil War soldiers.

The installation was made possible through the efforts of the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society with the participation of the Land Trust for Tennessee.

“Nashville has long recognized the role played by the Minnesota troops in the battle and considers it a great honor to have Minnesota, on this the 150th anniversary, install this beautiful monument, said John Allyn, president of the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society. “It will be a great addition to our preservation efforts.”

The commemoration event will include presentations by Minnesota and Nashville dignitaries. Those in attendance will include Minnesota Civil War Commemoration Task Force, Battle of Nashville Preservation Society, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Representative Dean Urdahl and John Allyn, president of Battle of Nashville Preservation Society.
